Hamburg Süd
Shipping company Hamburg Süd Nederland is making green innovations to its vehicle fleet and is thereby protecting the environment, as well as saving costs. On 28 May the (former) Rotterdam alderman and also portfolio holder for Transport and Traffic of the City region officially presented the management of Hamburg Süd Nederland with the carbon-neutral vehicle fleet certificate. On this day Hamburg Süd Nederland started the Go4MVO-programme. The Go4MVO-programme ensures that the vehicle fleet and the behaviour of the drivers becomes more environmentally friendly so Hamburg Süd Nederland can take another step in the reduction of carbon emissions, whilst savings are made on the vehicle fleet costs.
As first Rotterdam company partaking in the Go4MVO-programme, Hamburg Süd has also decided, as the first company in the Netherlands, to apply the P-Eye to cars as part of the programme. The P-Eye – which stands for Pressure eye – is a (self-calibrating) valve cap with a tire-pressure sensor. "We are keen to be ahead of the game in innovative and sustainable initiatives, and the P-Eye tire pressure sensor is a good aid in achieving this, as far as we are concerned" says Albrecht Meeusen, Joint General Manager Hamburg Süd Nederland. "Today during the tire-pressure campaign it became clear that the prevailing standard for tire pressure in the Netherlands also applies to our vehicle fleet. When checking the tire pressure it became clear that more than 60% of our vehicle fleet has insufficient tire pressure (low pressure). This costs unnecessary fuel consumption with associated carbon emissions. The P-Eye also gives our drivers the opportunity to actively contribute to saving the environment as well as realising cost reductions – in fuel consumption as well as tire wear".
